How a motor repair visit is approached
1. The motor is tested, not guessed at
A motor that will not run has a short list of causes, and they are separated at the pad: supply at the terminals, the capacitor, the shaft turning freely by hand, and the overload having tripped rather than the winding having failed.
2. Repair and replacement are weighed honestly
Bearings and capacitors are replaceable parts. Whether replacing them is the right call depends on the age and size of the motor and on what the rest of it has been through, and that comparison is made out loud rather than assumed.
3. A replacement is matched to the wet end
A pool motor is not chosen freely. It has to match the frame, the shaft, the voltage and the service factor of the pump it bolts onto, and what that means for your pad is explained before anything is ordered.
Motor or pump? Which half of the assembly failed
The equipment pad carries what looks like a single machine and is actually two bolted together. The motor is the dry end: an electric motor with bearings at each end, stator and rotor windings, a start or run capacitor, a shaft, and a thermal overload that cuts power when it overheats. The pump is the wet end in front of it, which holds the water.
The plain-English test is what the fault does. If the problem is NOISE or ELECTRICITY - a screech, a grind, a hum with no rotation, a breaker that trips, a motor too hot to touch, a motor that runs then stops and comes back later - the fault is on this page. If the problem is WATER - a drip, a puddle, air in the pot, a pump that will not hold prime, weak returns from a pump that sounds perfectly normal - the fault belongs to the pump, and that page covers it.
The one fault that starts on the other page and ends on this one is a leaking shaft seal. The seal is a wet-end part, but the water it lets past runs down the shaft into the bearings, so a pump leak that has been ignored for a season usually arrives here as a bearing noise. That is the boundary, and it is the reason these two pages link to each other instead of repeating each other.
Common pool motor faults and what they usually mean
The motor is screeching or grinding
That noise is the bearings. Pool motor bearings die from water, from heat and from age, and the most common single cause is a shaft seal that has been leaking into them from the wet end in front.
Bearings can be replaced. Whether they should be is a judgement about the motor: on a newer or larger motor a bearing set is usually worth fitting, while on an old motor that has been rained on from the inside for a season the bearings are rarely the only thing that is finished.
The motor hums but will not start
A hum with no rotation means the motor is energised and something is stopping it turning. The first suspect is the start capacitor, which is a serviceable part and a common failure.
The second is a mechanically locked shaft - a seized bearing, or a wet end jammed by debris. With the power off, the shaft is turned by hand: if it will not move, the fault is mechanical rather than electrical. A humming motor draws heavy current and should not be left switched on while this is worked out.
The motor starts, runs for a while, then cuts out
This is the thermal overload opening on heat and resetting once the motor cools, which is why the motor mysteriously works again an hour later.
Look for what is making the heat: blocked or filled-in ventilation slots, a motor boxed in with no airflow, direct sun on a still North Texas afternoon, a motor working against a restricted or undersized suction line, or windings that are on their way out.
The motor is running hot to the touch
Pool motors run warm by design and hot is different. Persistent heat comes from the same list as the overload trips: airflow, ambient conditions, load, and the state of the windings.
A motor running hot but not yet tripping is worth investigating while it is still a diagnosis rather than a replacement.
The motor trips the breaker
A breaker that goes as soon as the motor is called is an electrical fault: a shorted winding, a failed capacitor, water where it should not be, or damaged supply wiring at the pad.
Repeatedly resetting a breaker on a motor circuit is not a fix and is not safe. The circuit is traced with the power off. Note that a GFCI on the same pad may be protecting the light circuit rather than the motor, which is a different fault to chase.
The motor will not start at all and makes no sound
No sound at all points upstream of the motor: the breaker, a timer or automation controller that is not calling for the pump, a failed contactor or relay, or a supply fault.
The motor is confirmed dead only after the supply at its terminals has been checked. Many motors condemned as dead are motors nothing was asking to run.
The motor is noisy in a new way after a freeze or a long shutdown
A motor that has stood unused for months, or one that has been through a hard freeze, can come back with dry or rusted bearings and with condensation inside the housing.
This is the fault that seasonal checking exists to prevent, and it is also the failure that makes freeze protection useless: a freeze guard that calls for the pump cannot save the plumbing if the motor will not spin.
How a replacement pool motor is matched
A pool motor is not picked from a shelf on horsepower alone. It has to fit the wet end it bolts onto, run on the supply the pad provides, and turn the impeller it was matched to. Three groups of specifications decide it.
Frame and mount
The frame is the physical interface. Square-flange motors bolt to the pump through a square plate; C-face motors bolt through a round threaded face. They are not interchangeable without changing what they mount to.
The shaft matters as much as the flange: the thread and length have to suit the impeller, because on a pool motor the impeller screws directly onto the shaft. A motor that fits the bolt pattern but not the shaft is still the wrong motor.
Electrical
Voltage first: a pad wired for 230V and a pad wired for 115V need different motors, and some motors are dual-voltage with a link that has to be set correctly.
Then the ratings. Service factor is the margin the motor can run at above its nameplate rating, and horsepower multiplied by service factor gives the total horsepower figure that is often what a pump was actually specified around. Full-load amps is the number that has to sit inside what the circuit and its breaker can carry. Matching total horsepower rather than horsepower alone is what keeps a replacement behaving like the motor it replaced.
Speed
Single-speed motors run flat out whenever they run. Two-speed motors offer a low speed for long filtration hours and a high speed for cleaning and features. Variable-speed motors are permanent-magnet motors with a drive on top that sets the speed anywhere in their range.
Variable-speed has become the common replacement on a pad that runs long hours, because most of the day's filtration does not need full flow and a slower motor moves the same total water over more hours. It is also a different physical package with its own controls, so it is a specification decision rather than a like-for-like swap.
Classes of pool motor
Square-flange pool duty motors
The square mounting plate is the most common in-ground pool interface. Pool duty means the motor is built for the wet, corrosive, outdoor life a pad gives it, which a general purpose motor of the same rating is not.
C-face threaded-shaft motors
A round threaded mounting face instead of the square plate, used on a number of pump families. Identifying which face is on your pad is the first step of any motor quote, because it decides the whole part number.
Up-rated and full-rated motors
Two motors can show the same horsepower on the label and not be the same motor. A full-rated motor carries its rating with the service factor on top; an up-rated motor gets to its number by counting the service factor in. Total horsepower is the figure that compares them fairly.
Permanent-magnet variable-speed motors
A different motor technology with an integrated drive and a control panel on top. It runs quieter and over a range of speeds, and it is programmed rather than simply switched, which is part of what a replacement visit sets up.
Pool motor questions
My pool motor is screeching. Can it be rebuilt or does it need replacing?
A screech or a grind is almost always the bearings. Bearings can be pressed out and replaced, and on a large or recent motor that is often worth doing. On an older motor the bearing job has to be judged against a new motor, because the same water that killed the bearings has usually been sitting on the windings and the shaft as well.
The motor hums but will not start turning. What is wrong?
A hum with no rotation is the classic failed start capacitor, and it is the first thing checked. The other cause is a shaft that will not turn - a seized bearing or a locked wet end - which you can often feel by hand with the power off. Can the motor be replaced without replacing the whole pump?
Yes, if the wet end is sound. The motor unbolts from the back of the pump and a matched replacement goes on in its place, with a new shaft seal fitted while the assembly is apart. The wet end is only replaced with it when the housing is cracked or the impeller is worn.
How do I tell a motor fault from a pump fault?
Noise and electricity belong to the motor: screeching, humming, tripping breakers, running hot, cutting out. Water belongs to the pump: leaks, air in the pot, lost prime, weak flow with a healthy sound. Water leaking from between the two is the shaft seal, which is a pump part that damages the motor if it is ignored.
