For a filter that has actually failed rather than one that is due a clean: media coming back into the pool, pressure that will not drop after a proper clean, or water weeping from the tank.
When a filter has failed rather than fouled
Some filter symptoms are not about a full filter at all. Diatomaceous earth or sand arriving back in the pool through the returns, a pressure reading that will not drop after a proper strip-down and clean, water weeping from the clamp band or the tank seam: each of those says that something inside has given way, and no amount of washing puts it back.
The fix in those cases is a component replacement. A torn grid, a split cartridge element, a cracked lateral, a perished tank o-ring or a failed multiport valve are all parts, and they are replaced. When it is the tank itself that has gone, the unit is replaced instead. A filter that is simply loaded with what it has been trapping is a different job and belongs on the pool filter cleaning page.
What actually fails inside a filter
Torn or collapsed DE grids
The fabric over the grid is what holds the diatomaceous earth in place. A hole in it lets the powder straight through, which is why DE turning up on the pool floor after a recharge points at the grids and not at the dose.
A split or crushed cartridge element
Water takes the easy path. A split pleat, a collapsed core or a lifted end cap gives it a route past the filtering surface entirely, so the pool stays cloudy while the gauge reads as though everything is fine.
Cracked laterals or a channelled sand bed
The laterals at the bottom of a sand filter collect filtered water through fine slots. A cracked one passes sand back to the pool. A bed whose grains have rounded off lets water carve a channel through and skip most of the sand it should be crossing.
A failed clamp band or tank o-ring
The seam between the two halves of the tank is held by a band and sealed by an o-ring. A perished seal or a distorted band shows up as water weeping, or spraying, from the joint once the system is up to pressure.
A stuck or worn multiport valve
The valve that switches a sand filter between filter, backwash and waste relies on a spider gasket to seal each port. When it wears, the positions stop seating cleanly and water can run continuously to waste, or filter and backwash at the same time.
How the three filter types compare
The comparison below matters most when a filter is being replaced rather than repaired, because that is the point at which the type is genuinely a choice.
DE
Diatomaceous earth is packed over fabric-covered grids, and water is filtered through that powder layer. It is the finest of the three, filtering down into the single-digit micron range, which is why DE-filtered water reads as noticeably clearer.
The trade is work. The powder is washed away with the debris at every clean, so a fresh charge has to be measured and fed back through the skimmer each time.
Sand
Debris is trapped between the grains of a sand bed as water passes down through it. Filtration is far coarser than DE, in the region of 40 microns, so the finest particles pass straight through.
In exchange it is the least work between cleans: a backwash shifts the trapped debris without opening anything, and the bed itself lasts years before the grains round off enough to need replacing.
Cartridge
A pleated element sits between the other two on filtration. There is no backwash cycle and no powder to recharge, so the maintenance is periodic washing of the element rather than anything done at the pad.
Modern elements carry a large surface area in a small tank, which is what lets them run a long stretch between cleans before the pressure climbs.
When the problem is not the filter
The gauge on the filter reads the resistance the pump is pushing against, which means it reports on the whole loop and not just on the filter. A reading that looks like a filter fault can be a clogged pump basket, an air leak on the suction side or an impeller that is losing its bite. That is why the pump gets ruled out before a filter is condemned and a part is ordered.
A filter housing holds pressure
A filter tank under a running pump is a pressure vessel, and a clamp band released before that pressure has been let out can come off with real force.
The pump is stopped first, the air relief on top of the filter is opened and left open until it has stopped venting, and only then is the band touched.
Questions about filter faults
Is my filter broken or just dirty?
A dirty filter comes right after a clean: the pressure drops back to its normal starting reading and the flow returns. A filter whose pressure will not come down after a proper strip-down and clean, or that is sending its own media back into the pool, has a fault rather than a load of debris.
Can DE grids be replaced individually?
A single torn grid can be swapped on its own. Grids that have aged together tend to fail within a short span of each other, though, so a set well into its service life is often changed as a set rather than one at a time.
Does a sand filter ever need new sand?
Yes. The grains round off over years of service, so water begins to channel through the bed rather than filter across it. Backwashing moves debris but does not restore the shape of worn grains, so the fix at that point is fresh media.
Should a failed filter be repaired or replaced?
It depends on which part failed and on the condition of the tank. A torn grid, a split element, a cracked lateral or a perished o-ring are parts, and parts get replaced. A tank that is cracked, or a clamp seat that no longer seals, points at the unit itself rather than a component inside it.
What the weekly visit contributes
The equipment check on a maintenance visit records the filter's clean starting pressure. That single number is what makes a later reading interpretable: without a baseline, a gauge showing a given pressure is just a number, and with one it is either normal or a fault.
