The three types of pool heater

Gas-fired heaters

A gas heater burns fuel in a combustion chamber and passes the pool water through a heat exchanger sitting above it. It makes heat on demand and its output does not depend much on how cold the air outside is, which is what makes it the usual choice for occasional use and for cold snaps.

What fails on one: the ignitor or pilot assembly, the gas valve, the pressure or flow switch, the high-limit switches, the burner tray corroding from below, and the heat exchanger corroding from the inside where unbalanced water has been sitting against it. Combustion appliances also need their venting and airflow intact, which is part of what a repair visit looks at.

Heat pumps

A heat pump does not burn anything. It runs a refrigerant circuit that collects heat from the outside air and transfers it into the pool water, which is why it uses electricity to move heat rather than to make it.

What fails on one: the fan and its motor, the compressor, refrigerant loss through a leak, the reversing valve on units that can also cool, and the sensors and board that run the defrost cycle. Because output falls as the air cools, a heat pump that seems weak in a Trophy Club January may be behaving exactly as designed rather than failing.

Solar collectors

A solar system has no burner and no compressor. The pump pushes pool water up through collector panels, usually on a roof, where the sun warms it, and a diverter valve decides whether the water goes through the array or straight back to the pool.

Common pool heater faults and what they usually mean

The heater will not ignite at all

On a gas heater the chain is: is the gas on, is there a call for heat from the thermostat, is the flow switch satisfied, is the ignitor working, and is the gas valve opening. A break anywhere in that chain shows the same way at the pool, which is a cold pool.

Before any of that is worth checking, the pump has to be running and moving water. A heater that has never had adequate flow will never get past its own first safety check.

The heater fires and then shuts off within minutes

Short firing then dropping out is the signature of a safety switch opening. The usual candidates are the pressure or flow switch losing its signal as soon as the system settles, and the high-limit switch opening because the water passing through the exchanger is not carrying the heat away.

Both of those point at flow rather than at the burner. A filter that is due, a basket full of leaves or a valve that was left part-closed will produce exactly this.

The heater runs but the water never gets to temperature

A heater that runs continuously without reaching the set point is either undersized for the volume it is being asked to heat, losing its heat as fast as it makes it, or running at reduced output.

Evaporation is the big uncounted loss on an uncovered pool, and a heat pump working in cold air is simply slower. On a gas heater, a scaled heat exchanger insulates the very surface that is supposed to transfer heat, so the burner runs and the pool does not warm.

There is a fault code on the display

Heaters with electronic controls stop and report why. The code narrows the fault to a circuit - ignition, flow, high limit, sensor, or the board itself - which turns a guess into a check.

A code that clears on a reset and returns is still a fault. Repeatedly clearing a lockout without finding what set it is how a small fault becomes a heat exchanger.

The heater is leaking water underneath

Water under a heater comes from the plumbing connections, from the header at either end of the heat exchanger, or from the exchanger itself. The last of those is the serious one, because water leaking inside a gas heater lands on the burner tray and destroys it.

A heater found leaking is shut down rather than run on. What matters as much as the leak is what caused it, which is usually chemistry.

The heater short-cycles in cold weather

Rapid on-off cycling in cold conditions can be a heat pump running its defrost sequence, which is normal behaviour, or a gas heater tripping a limit because the incoming water is cold enough to condense inside the combustion chamber.

Cold weather also brings freeze logic into play: many heaters have their own freeze protection that calls for circulation, and that logic overlaps with the pad's freeze guard rather than replacing it.

When the heater is not the fault

It is worth stating separately, because it is the most common misdiagnosis on the pad. A heater will not fire, or will fire and then quit, when the water moving through it drops below what the manufacturer specified. The flow switch is doing precisely what it was fitted to do.

Everything that can restrict flow is upstream: a skimmer basket full of leaves, a pump basket that has not been emptied, a clogged impeller, a shaft seal leaking air, a filter that is long past due, a valve turned down after some other job, a pump running at a variable speed too low to satisfy the switch, or a pool level below the skimmer throat.

That is why a heater call frequently ends at the pump or the filter, and why keeping those two right is the cheapest heater maintenance there is.

Setting pool water temperature

A commonly cited reference point for pool water is around 78 degrees Fahrenheit, with many swimmers preferring something closer to 80. Those are general guidance figures rather than a promise about what any particular heater will achieve on any particular day.

Every degree above the temperature the pool would otherwise sit at costs run time, because the heater has to make up not just the initial rise but the heat the pool keeps losing to the air and to evaporation. A higher set point on an uncovered pool in a windy week is a much larger job than the same set point on a still one.

This is also why the heater and the water chemistry are not separate subjects. A heater run hard against scaled or acidic water is a heater being consumed by the water it is heating, and the temperature you choose sets how much of that exposure it gets.

Heater types and configurations

Atmospheric gas heaters

Draw combustion air naturally rather than with a fan. Simpler, and more sensitive to wind, venting and anything obstructing the airflow around the unit.

Forced-draft gas heaters

Use a blower to move combustion air through the burner, which makes them less sensitive to wind but adds the blower, its pressure switch and its wiring to the list of things that can stop the heater.

Millivolt and electronic ignition

Older heaters use a standing pilot and a millivolt circuit that generates its own tiny voltage. Newer ones use an electronic ignition module and a board. The two fail differently and are diagnosed differently, so identifying which is on the pad comes first.

Copper and cupro-nickel heat exchangers

Copper is the traditional exchanger material. Cupro-nickel is more tolerant of aggressive water and is often specified on salt pools and heavily used pools. Neither survives water left badly out of balance indefinitely.

Air-source heat pumps

A fan, a compressor and a refrigerant circuit collecting heat from the air. Efficient in mild conditions, slower as the air cools, and dependent on clear airflow around the unit.

Why does my pool heater lock out on low flow?

Every heater has a pressure or flow switch that refuses to let it fire unless enough water is moving through the heat exchanger. It is a safety device, not a fault. When it trips, the cause is usually upstream: a dirty filter, a clogged pump basket or impeller, a valve turned down, a pump running at too low a speed, or a low water level starving the skimmer.
