Why a pool light will not turn on
Start with the breakers, switches and the GFCI
Before anything else, check the obvious circuit devices: the breaker in the panel, any fuse, the wall switch, the timer or automation channel that controls the light, and the GFCI. A ground fault circuit interrupter is very commonly wired into the underwater light circuit, and when it trips it cuts power upstream of everything.
A popped GFCI is easy to miss because it is often in an outdoor box away from the panel. If the red reset button has gone, that is where the power stopped - and it stopped for a reason worth knowing.
A breaker, fuse or GFCI that keeps tripping
One trip can be a surge or a wet day. Repeated trips are a fault, and the device is doing exactly what it was installed to do.
Do not keep resetting it. A GFCI on a pool light circuit trips because current is leaking to ground somewhere it should not, and on a pool that means moisture reaching a live part. That is traced with the power off, not overridden.
Power is present but the light is dark
If the circuit is live and the light is not, the fault is at the fixture end: a failed lamp, a failed LED driver or module, a corroded lamp holder, or a broken conductor in the cord.
The lamp is checked with every switch and breaker OFF first. That order is not a formality on a pool circuit.
Replacing the lamp
Replacement is like-for-like on voltage. A 12V system runs through a transformer and takes 12V lamps; a 120V system takes 120V lamps. They do not substitute for one another.
Wattages follow the fixture: 12V pool lamps are commonly 300W, while 120V lamps come in 300W and 500W ratings. They are medium-base reflective flood lamps of special design, built for a sealed wet fixture. A flood lamp bought as a household bulb is not a substitute for one, whatever the base and the wattage say.
Water inside the fixture or a failed lens gasket
The gasket between the lens and the housing is what keeps the pool out of the fixture, and it hardens and shrinks with age and heat. Water inside a fixture shows as condensation on the lens, a lamp that fails repeatedly, or a GFCI that trips.
A fixture that has taken water is opened, dried, inspected and resealed with a new gasket, or replaced. Fitting a fresh lamp into a wet fixture just buys another failed lamp.
The niche, the cord or the conduit is damaged
The fixture sits in a niche in the pool wall and its cord runs back through conduit to a junction box. Corroded niche fittings, a cord chafed where it passes into the conduit, and water tracking down the conduit itself are all real faults and all beyond a homeowner check.
These are the faults that produce an intermittent trip - fine on a dry day, tripping after rain - and they are traced properly rather than guessed at.
The fixture will not come out of the niche
A fixture is designed to be removed on its own coil of spare cord and lifted onto the deck for work. Fixtures seized in their niches by corrosion or by a previous repair are common on older pools.
Forcing one damages the niche, which is a much bigger job than the light. The pool does not need to be drained for the light itself.

What the 1968 code date means for an older Trophy Club pool
Swimming pools were first brought into the National Electrical Code in 1968, under Article 680. That is the point at which pool electrical installations - underwater lighting, bonding, equipment wiring and clearances - came under a written national standard rather than local practice.
The practical consequence is straightforward: a pool built before that date may have underwater lighting and equipment wiring that predates those rules entirely, and a pool built shortly after it was built to a much earlier version of them. Decades of subsequent revisions sit between then and now.

Types of pool light
Incandescent halogen fixtures
The traditional underwater light: a sealed housing, a reflective flood lamp of special design, and a lens with a gasket. Simple, and easy to get wrong by fitting the wrong lamp.
What fails on one: the lamp, the lamp holder, the gasket, and the fixture itself after enough cycles of heat and water. They run hot, which is exactly why they are designed to be operated submerged and why the seal matters so much.
White LED retrofits
An LED lamp or module fitted into an existing fixture, or a complete LED fixture in place of the old one. They run far cooler and last far longer than the lamp they replace.
What fails on one: the driver or power module, the connections, and the same gasket and niche the old fixture depended on. A retrofit has to match the voltage of the circuit it is going into, exactly as a lamp does.
Colour-changing LED fixtures
A colour fixture holds its own controller and steps through colours and light shows. Because there is no separate signal wire, the colour and mode are usually selected by a sequence of power interruptions - the switch or breaker being cycled a set number of times.
That is worth knowing before assuming a fault. A light that has changed colour, or landed on a show nobody asked for, has very often just been through a power interruption - a brief outage, a tripped device, or an automation schedule - rather than broken. A genuine fault on one of these is usually the module, the driver or the same water-ingress story as any other fixture.

Why does the GFCI trip as soon as I switch the pool light on?
A ground fault circuit interrupter cuts power when it detects current leaking out of the circuit, and it does that fastest under load. A trip on switch-on points at moisture in the fixture, a failed lens gasket, damaged cord insulation in the niche or conduit, or a fault in the wiring itself. It is protection working, and it should be traced rather than repeatedly reset.
Can I put a 120V bulb in a 12V pool light?
No. The fixture and the lamp have to match the voltage of the circuit, and 12V systems run through a transformer while 120V systems do not.
